FRP Tanks vs. Steel Alternatives

Above ground FRP TANK in white coating

Two of the most commonly used materials in the construction of large storage tanks are FRP, fibreglass-reinforced plastic, or steel. Steel is a traditional version of the storage unit for industries that deal with toxic, caustic or corrosive substances, but FRP has been steadily rising in popularity thanks to the numerous benefits this type of tank can offer. If you’re in the market for a new, reliable tank to store even the most abrasive of materials, we’ve got a few things for you to consider. Here’s how FRP tanks vs. steel alternatives can affect your next project!

FRP Tanks

Steel Alternatives

  • Reliable and flexible option with higher “strength to weight” ratio than traditional materials.
  • More durable in the face of extreme exposure to temperatures and chemicals stored in the tank.
  • Potential faster delivery if one of our stock units fits your needs and customized orders can take upwards of a few weeks.
  • Non-corrosive, naturally non-conductive to electricity and won’t rust no matter how wet the environment is.
  • Lightweight and easier to transport, making them cheaper to ship to your worksite.
  • Can be customized with a variety of equipment pieces and accessories, including valves, ladders, or a sloped bottom for complete drainage.
  • Watertight and can be repaired.
  • Outlives its competing tanks by a decade.
  • Sturdy build, but susceptible to corrosion and rust damage due to exposure to the elements or to the materials being stored.
  • Approximate turnaround time from order to delivery can be 3 to 6 weeks, also requires heavy equipment to install and transport the unit. Transport can be more costly.
  • Exposure to groundwater, rain and the water it’s storing can cause the tank to rust and reduce its lifespan if not routinely coated in a protective layer.
  • Steel is non-combustible and fire-resistant, able to tolerate continuous high temperatures.
  • Steel is conductive to electricity.
  • Requires more maintenance and repairs than FRP tanks.
  • Steel tanks don’t breed algae and can keep potable water clean if properly sprayed with a protective coating.
  • Will cost you more in the long run with inspections, maintenance and repairs.

Your storage needs are unique and we understand the need to weigh the options of what will work best for your requirements to be safely and properly met.
